The overarching aim for English in the national curriculum is to promote high standards of language and literacy by equipping pupils with a strong command of the spoken and written word, and to develop their love of literature through widespread reading for enjoyment.
The Pebworth English Curriculum aims to equip pupils with the English skills they need to be positive and confident learners who are well prepared for whatever path they choose, setting them up with the skills they need to excel in all areas of the curriculum.
We use Phonics Bug and Bug Club to teach early reading and support pupils to develop key skills by working in small, focused groups. As children progress through school, we engage in whole class guided reading, focusing on key skills at every stage. Pupils are supported to make progress in reading at their own pace and are challenged to read widely and deeply throughout their time with us.
At Pebworth First School we treat children as writers, from the earliest stage, who have ideas that they will want to communicate, building on writing skills they have acquired and their knowledge of print from their environment. We promote a love of telling stories beginning with drawings and mark making and progressing to writing. Children will be encouraged, by their classroom teachers, to discuss their English skills with their peers and with the whole class before beginning their written work. At Pebworth First School we recognise that a high-quality mathematics education provides a foundation for understanding the world and is essential to everyday life, critical to science, technology and engineering, and necessary for financial literacy and most forms of employment.
Mathematics is a creative and highly interconnected discipline that has been developed over centuries, providing the solution to some of history’s most intriguing problems. By employing a practical and problem-solving approach child can become immersed in these developments and create mathematical traditions of the future.
Children at Pebworth are supported to achieve through engaging with a developmental and progressive mathematics curriculum rich in problem solving and reasoning. We use a ‘maths tree’ to structure our mathematics learning with pupils working through the roots of a concept before progressing through to solving more complex problems where they are asked to apply what they have learnt.

Excellent science education provides the foundations for so many other disciplines and provides pupils with the opportunity to develop observation and evaluation skills. At Pebworth, we aim to support pupils to explore the science curriculum as practically as possible and be curious about the world around them.
Our pupils engage with a range of exciting investigations and develop their skills of working scientifically across their time with us so that when they leave year 5 they are well prepared to continue to explore the world around them in the next step in their education.
